About the Author

Mike Jefferies is a chartered civil engineer. Graduating from King’s (London), an interest in theoretical soil mechanics lead to an MSc from Imperial. He has worked for Golder Associates since 1978, with a ten year absence largely at Gulf Canada. Based in Vancouver and an Associate of the company since 1992, Mike is also a Visiting Professor at the University of Manchester.

Ken Been is a chartered civil engineer. Graduating from University of Cape Town, an interest in experimental soil mechanics and a Rhodes Scholarship lead to a PhD at Oxford. He has worked as a geotechnical consultant for Golder Associates since 1981, becoming a Principal of the company in 1991. He is presently based in Houston.

Denny Ng is a Professor at the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus.

Raymond R. Tan is a University Fellow and Professor of Chemical Engineering at De La Salle University, Manila, Philippines. He is also Director of that institution's Center for Engineering and Sustainable Development Research. His main research interests are process systems engineering, life cycle assessment and pinch analysis.

Dominic Foo is a Professor of Process Design and Integration at the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus. He is a world leading researcher in resource conservation with process integration techniques, and has two forthcoming books and over 180 scientific papers. He is the winner of the Innovator of the Year Award 2009 (Institution of Chemical Engineers, UK) 2010 Young Engineer Award (Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), Outstanding Young Malaysian Award 2012 (Junior Chamber International, JCI) and winner of the SCEJ Award for Outstanding Asian Researcher and Engineer 2013 (Society of Chemical Engineers, Japan).

Mahmoud M. El-Halwagi is Professor at the Artie McFerrin Department of Chemical Engineering at Texas A&M University. Prof El-Halwagi is the author of three textbooks on process integration and sustainable design and more than a 150 papers and book chapters in the fields of sustainability, biorefining, and integrated process design.

About the Author
Georges Métailié is Emeritus Director of Research at the National Centre for Scientific Research, and member of the Centre Alexandre Koyré, Paris, France. Beginning with the study of ancient Chinese botanical knowledge, he is now mainly working on the comparative study of the history of knowledge about plants and animals in China and Japan since the sixteenth century. For more than twenty years, he has been lecturing at the National Museum for Natural History in Paris in the field of ethnobotany. He is an honorary fellow of the Needham Research Institute, Cambridge, UK, a foreign member of the Washington Academy of Sciences, USA, and received, in 2006, with Francine Fèvre, the Auguste Chevalier Award of the Académie des Sciences in Paris, France.

About the Author

Anne Bolin is Professor of Anthropology in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Elon University and is the recipient of the Elon University Distinguished Scholar Award. She is the co-author of Perspectives on Human Sexuality (1999) with Patricia Whelehan. She is also co-author of Athletic Intruders: Women, Culture and Exercise (2003) with Jane Granskog. She is a Diplomate with the American Board of Sexology, a certified sex researcher, Fellow of the Society for Applied Anthropology, former co-chair/co-founder and currently Steering Committee member of the Human Sexuality and Anthropology Interest Group.

Patricia Whelehan is Professor of Anthropology and AIDS Education Coordinator at SUNY-Potsdam. She is the co-author of Perspectives on Human Sexuality (1999) with Anne Bolin and author of An Anthropological Perspective on Prostitution: The World’s Oldest Profession (2001). In 2007, she received the President’s Award for Excellence in Service. In 1999 and 2008, she received the Phi Eta Sigma award for Outstanding Teacher of the year, and in 2008 she was inducted into Phi Kappa Phi, a national honor society that recognizes scholarly distinction. Her textbook, The Anthropology of AIDS: A Global Perspective is forthcoming in 2009.
