Victoria's Voice is a heartfelt and honest look at how drugs and alcohol led to the tragic death of teenager. If you have watched the documentary "Queen of Versailles," you caught a glimpse of her. The film documented her family's life as they were building the largest house in America. Reading her journal makes her relatable and gives the feel of a modern-day Go Ask Alice, complete with hand-written hashtags. It was especially touching knowing Victoria gave her mom permission to publish her journal in her last text before she died. It's obvious her parents loved her and are dedicated to helping other parents save their children from going down the same road. The book includes a drug guide for parents, with pictures and street names, signs to watch for that could point to drug abuse in your own kids, and resources to turn to. It is a must-read for parents of teens or tweens.

I found the book interesting, but it seems that this young lady had no relationship with her parents. I have a daughter that is 6 years sober, has a beautiful two and a half old daughter and another daughter due in July. I am a retired school teacher and did not have the means to send her to a pricey 30 day rehab. Instead she went to a place in Sumter, SC. It cost 700.00 to get her in and I had to promise she would be there for nine months. She met her husband there and they have a very good, sober life together. The rehab is called Any Length. They get the patient detoxed and then take them out to get a job so they can pay for themselves while they are there. Parents are not allowed to have any contact during the first month. Parents are NEVER allowed to give them money. It is not an extravagant place, but it serves the purpose we all want for our children. Sobriety that last for the rest of their lives!

About the Author

Professor James Dunbar (MD, FRCPEdin, FRCGP, FRACGP, FFPHM) is the inaugural Director of the Greater Green Triangle University Department of Rural Health, Flinders and Deakin Universities, Australia. In his former post of Medical Director of Borders Primary Care NHS Trust in Scotland, he won the Golden Phoenix Award – the primary award for improvement in health care in the UK.

Professor Prasuna Reddy (PhD, MAPS) is Chair of Rural Mental Health Flinders University, and Director of Research, Greater Green Triangle University Department of Rural Health. She is a practising health and organisational psychologist and also currently Director of Training for Life! Taking Action on Diabetes a joint initiative of the Victorian Government and Diabetes Australia – Victoria.

Stephen May (BSc Hons) originally trained as a psychologist, but left the profession to establish his own publishing company. About the Author

BURNE HOGARTH (1911–1996), hailed as the “Michaelangelo of the comic strip,” was one of the most iconic cartoonists and influential arts educators of the twentieth century and remains so today. After attending the Chicago Art Institute and Academy of Fine Arts at the age of fifteen, Hogarth began an illustrious career in arts education, fine arts, illustration, advertising, and comics, and became recognized as one of the earliest creators of the graphic novel. Best known for his innovative illustrations of the syndicated Sunday Tarzan, Hogarth broke fresh ground in the newspaper comic strip by combining classicism, expressionism, and narrative in a powerful, new way.

As cofounder of the School of Visual Arts—one of the world’s leading art schools—he brought his unique approach to art into the classroom. His passionate lectures on anatomy and art history formed the foundation for The Burne Hogarth®Dynamic Drawing Series that continues to teach and influence artists and animators worldwide.

Salter, known for such novels as White Lies, offers a direct and startling look at the alarming problem of sexual predators in the U.S. Drawing on her experience counseling victims and offenders, she creates a daunting picture for the readers. "This is not a book with complete and comfortable answers. It will not finish with a checklist for identifying a sex offender.... But if I do my job right, reading this book will make it harder for sex offenders to get access to you or your children," she says in her introduction. Despite some much publicized media cases, Salter believes there are many misunderstandings about sexual predators. Most of the crimes are premeditated and carefully planned, and fewer than 5% of sexual predators are caught. With anecdotes and case histories, Salter examines such various predators as rapists and child molesters. Then, she goes on to offer some specific strategies to avoid high-risk situations. These tactics consist of monitoring children, even teens, on the Internet; carrying a cell phone; using home security systems, etc. The desciptions of violent attacks and victims' experience will undoubtedly unnerve readers. However, the subject matter is likely to appeal more to police or psychology professionals. The strategies the author offers for readers are usually fairly obvious. While sexual crimes may be on the increase, readers may see this book as necessary only after they've been victimized rather than as a preventive guide.

Using interviews with sex offenders, Salter offers chilling portraits of a variety of people, including priests, teachers, coaches, and others who come in daily contact with children, who take advantage of their positions and the trust of children and their parents to commit heinous acts. Salter profiles child molesters, rapists, sadists, and psychopaths, including their general techniques for deception. Her final chapter, focused on helping parents to protect their children, emphasizes deflecting sex offenders--because detecting them is nearly impossible--with practical suggestions for vigilantly monitoring children's activities and who coaches or counsels them.
